The mysterious substitution of all men of the Iberian Peninsula

The research project of the archaeological site of Cabezo Redondo (Villena), led by professors Dr. Mauro Hernández, Dr. Gabriel García and Dr. Virginia Barciela, members of the Department's Prehistory area, has participated in a recently published work in the prestigious journal Science, which analyzes the genetic evolution of the populations of the Iberian Peninsula in the last 8,000 years.

The data provided by several Cabezo Redondo burials have allowed to characterize genetically the populations of the Bronze Age (2200-1200 BC), evidencing the replacement of the elites and the appearance of a new population group of steppe origin (southern Russia and Ukraine) that settled in the peninsula at the beginning of this period and that managed to perpetuate itself in power for centuries.
